Rosel Hyde and the FCC

LaReita reports: I just got off the phone with my cousin Meri Hyde Leslie. She is with her dad (Rosel) today doing family history work on the Hyde family. Out of nowhere Uncle Rosel said, “You know the story about Henry, the Hyde name, radio station and the FCC?”

When Aunt Nina and Uncle Rosel Hyde moved to Phoenix in the 1960’s they stayed with mom and dad (D Henry and Grace Leavitt) at the 1615 W. Mission Lane home for a few weeks until they found their own home. During that time dad had become acquainted with a man that was trying to buy a radio station in Phoenix.

Since dad made some trips back east for his conventions, he told this man that he’ll go to Washington DC to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and talk to them about the radio station. The head of the FCC had just retired, and his name was Rosel Henderson Hyde.

When dad showed up to the FCC office, no appointment, and spoke to the secretary with a smile, “I just spoke with Rosel Hyde yesterday”, there were wide eyes. He was ushered right in to see the right person!

That’s our dad! It’s not what you know, it’s who you know!

Rosel couldn’t remember what became of the rest of the situation, but this was fun to hear this nonetheless!

[S8E1] Oh, look, the ocean!

So, I did it, I got to the coast during the summer! I’m excited. But you know what I’m not excited for? 2 hours of commuting each day.

1: Complaining time So, our apartment is out of our area, which is okay, the springfeild apartment is out of it’s area. It happens, you just have to do the best you can when it comes to the apartment situation in OR. But our apartment is 40 minutes out of our area, one way. It takes F O R E V E R for us to get anywhere. The reason?? We have no car, and the hills are alive with the sound of my complaining. The Coos Bay area is so dang hilly we loose 2-3 hours a day just walking.

2: Complimenting time My companion; Elder Robinson is pretty cool, he’s from St. George and is a hard worker for only having 3 months left. We are in a ward share with another set of elders, and they’re pretty cool. We’ve got Elder Kash “Money” Kerbs and Elder Zach “Served with me in Spring-a-ding” Hyer. They cover one half of Coos Bay, and Robinson and I the other. We hang out pretty often (Is this what college feels like?) Last night we stayed up till 1 playing Trivial pursuit (Jesus version) The people here are pretty cool, I haven’t really been able to get out tracting, but the people we have talked to are pretty cool. The food around here is nice, there’s this one REEEAAALLLLYY good place called Vinny’s. The whole place just has that Guy Fieri aesthetic to it.

3: It is very rainy. (Who’d’ve thunk??) So yeah, first day as we were walking to somebody’s place it started raining lightly. Because I am a silly boy, I thought that all I would need was a sweater.

I got soaked. That light rain starts to get heavier as you’re walking through it for 40 minutes. Lesson learned, take rain jacket. Maybe even invest in an umbrella?

This should be a good transfer, I’m going to work hard despite my challenges (These dang heck’n gay Hills) and prove to President that I should train. He’s going to need some trainers in the upcoming months. We have a group of 30 missionaries finishing up in a few months, and we’re going to get a group to replace them. Gotta let president know that he can trust me.

Love ya lots, here’s some basic white girl pictures that we took on the beach! <3

[S7E6] Birthdays and conference!!

I’m going to be honest, I thought that conference was going to have some cooler announcements(18 months for elders?? Iced Coffee is kosh?? There’s a 13th tribe that has been hidden on the moon??) But as they said, announcements shouldn’t take up too much of church time. Reflecting that they didn’t announce much in conference anyways.

1: Happy (mildly disappointing) Birthday to me!! We had a lot of lessons set up on Thursday (my birthday) and we needed the car. So we tried to get the car, and it took a long time, as 5th ward was with the ZLs on the opposite end of the zone, and blah blah… We ended up waiting on a street corner for an hour, to get the car that we didn’t even really need. We pretty much just stayed on one street, but Elder Randall and I didn’t tell anyone that. Anyways, the majority of our lessons weren’t there. These things combined to a very unhappy me. Until I got back to our apartment and opened the birthday package. That really made my day better. That and a small cupcake/candle really made the day feel special. It ended up being a good day. Thanks for all the gift cards everyone!! <3 <3 <3

2: Don’t give 5th ward your car Come Sunday, after conference, we got a referral for someone at the opposite end of our area. 5th ward had the car so they could say ‘goodbye’ to some of the people in the area. It was raining, and we didn’t want to walk. So we called 5th ward, asking for a ride. They didn’t pick up. We called them again, they didn’t pick up. SO being the good missionaries we are we decided to walk an hour and a half in pouring rain. The person we wanted to talk to wasn’t there. I was angry, and wet. Bad way to end the day.

3: Oh yeah, transfers! So I am going to be leaving Sring-a-ding, and will be going to Coos Bay, For the SUMMER!!! I’m excited, I’ll be in a ward share with Elder Hyer, from our very own Oakridge!

4: Hey Bri! Let’s get some over-hyped burgers! So Bri came up from Roseburg to chat, and I heard that this one place called “Fins” was good. So we met there and had a pretty long chat. The burgers were… okay. Definitely over-hyped, but that’s okay I got to chat with a friend.

5: I like Frogs Frogs are pretty cool animals, and as a result of my appreciation for frogs I have drawn many of them. For no reason. So there.
Yeah, that pretty much sums up the week, kinda weird week, but still fun nonetheless.
